I smoked out the neighbors

About a month or two ago, I decided to cook spaghetti and meatballs as a main course for some friends coming over. Not having cooked meatballs for a while, I put them in the oven on a cookie sheet. Minutes later there was smoke coming from the oven through the burners. I didn't understand what the problem could be so I opened the oven door. Smoke came rushing out like it was being sucked out purposely. I ran to the open window and stuck my head out to get some fresh air. My roommate darted to the back bedroom and opened the door to the terrace. I quickly went back to the oven and saw that the problem had stemmed from grease running off of the meatballs to the bottom of the oven and burning. Thankfully I had just enough time to turn off the oven before the whole apartment filled up with smoke. My roommate and I had to run outside to keep from getting smoke inhalation - the apartment was so smoky that you couldn't see from one side of the room to the other.

Not long afterward, our neighbors were hanging out the windows asking us if something was on fire. Even though our front door was shut, the smoke had filled up the entire hallway and made it into all of the other apartments. I gently calmed our neighbors down and asked them if they could be patient. They all went back inside and there was suddenly a simultaneous humming of window A/C units in our building.

It wasn't until about 30 minutes of fanning efforts that the smoke finally calmed down. Dinner was late, but thankfully our guests were late too so it worked out well - and nothing tasted like smoke either!
